South African Association of Botanists (SAAB) offers scholarship programme towards further studies in 2024 / 2025 for South African students.

About the Scholarship Provider – SAAB: The South African Association of Botanists (SAAB) was established to elevate and uphold the status of the Botany profession across all sectors. SAAB serves various academic botanical disciplines with members in universities, academic institutions, and research institutions nationwide.

About the SAAB Scholarship Program: SAAB invites students to apply for the SAAB Scholarship for the 2024 academic year. The scholarship supports postgraduate botanically-related science studies at the Honours/4th year/MSc level.

Coverage Value & Selection: Bursaries will be awarded as follows:

  • Honours/4th year Level:
    • 3 bursaries valued at R12,000 each for 1 year of study.
    • Recipients will also receive a 1-year complimentary SAAB membership.
  • MSc Studies:
    • 3 bursaries valued at R40,000 each.
    • Recipients will receive R20,000 in the first year and R20,000 in the following year, contingent on satisfactory first-year results.
    • Candidates will also receive a 2-year complimentary SAAB membership.

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Reside in one of the SADC countries (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland, Angola, Malawi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Seychelles, Mozambique, Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros).
  • Study towards a botanically related science qualification.
  • Graduated with a minimum overall average of 70%.
  • Studying at a recognized tertiary institution in South Africa.
  • Have a supervisor who is a paid-up member of SAAB.
  • MSc students: Graduated with a BSc Honours degree (minimum overall average of 70%) and in the first year of MSc study.

Along with the online application, submit clear copies of the following documentation in PDF format:

  • Full academic transcripts (certified copies) or marks with a letter confirming marks if transcripts are not yet available.
  • Curriculum Vitae with names and contact details of 2 references.
  • Motivational letter written by the applicant describing proposed research interests.
  • Motivational letter from the supervisor.

Closing Date:

  • Masters students: 28 February 2024.
  • Honours students: 31 March 2024.
